Would you consider webpage itself as a form of online advertising?

lets say real estate agency has a web-page with info about the company and objects for sale or rent, and doesn’t advertise it at all. So my question would be if the web-page alone would be considered as a form of online advertising. Please answer if you know what you are talking about. Thanks in advance!:)

Yes it is considered advertising. Business accounting methods put hosting charges, etc. into advertising. You don’t have to spend additional money for advertising because there are tons of ways to get the word around about a website without spending money. The site itself is an advertisement for your company.

A web page itself is considered advertising about as much as a physical storefront on the corner of main street is. Some people might just walk into the office just like they might stumble upon the website it if it is naturally optimized (called organic search), but the traffic will not be as high as it would if you advertised. There are many ways to advertise a web site online, such as Search Engine Marketing (bidding on keywords), and banner advertising on other web pages. Or of course you can advertise to draw traffic to the web page by using the traditional media (tv, radio, print, and outdoor). Another way to promote a web site is by putting it on promotional items, such as key chains, plastic footballs, mugs, etc, along with the logo, and handing them out to potential customers.
The question you should be asking is, is “organic search” considered advertising? First of all, organic search comes from google, yahoo, and other search engines picking up keywords that are a part of your web site’s html design. It is considered free, but you probably have to pay for the web design and continue to update it to keep being picked up in searches. According to Wikipedia, “Organic search results refers to those listings in search engine results pages that appear by dint of their relevance to the search terms, as opposed to their being adverts.” So they are saying that it is not advertising. I would say the answer is no.

I would say no. While a web page may contain ads promoting specials, events, etc.., its purpose is much greater than advertising. In fact, in the b-to-b space, a site that comes off too “adsy” (sp?), is really a turn-off for prospects. When I think of a web site, I think sales, marketing, thought leadership and support. Ad is to web site as advertising is to marketing.
